The number of people suffering from a mental health illness is increasing in South Australia.
Approximately one in five adults are affected by mental illness every year; this includes people
who suffer from anxiety disorders, depression, substance abuse disorders and psychotic
illnesses such as schizophrenia, and personality disorders. Anxiety and depression are
estimated to cost the Australian economy $3.3 billion annually.
Mental illness is not necessarily a lifelong illness and recovery can be very successful with early
intervention and the right treatment. For people suffering from mental illness, the key to leading
fulfilling lives in the community is receiving appropriate ongoing treatment and support. The
Rann Labor Government has failed these people.
The selling of land at Glenside for a film hub indicates that the Rann Labor Government is more
interested in movies than mental health. The Rann Labor Government has ignored the needs of
those who are most vulnerable in our community.
Support and facilities for people with mental illness has deteriorated considerably over the past
eight years under the Rann Labor Government.
